Software Fail



My license is actually valid.

Just so you're aware, people use Xilinx FPGAs and the tool-chain for critical systems. I hope I'm not shaking your faith in that PET scanner, though. They're probably free from the issues associated with radiation therapy systems.

Did you see the NY times article referenced in that blog? It made me sick to think about it. Faulty software or inappropriate inputs in the software causing someone to get, I think it was 26 doses of extremely high radiation. Several people died, and radiation poisoning is not pretty. I think they said that one machine was mis-programmed for an entire year before someone noticed.

Yeah, the THERAC case study was required reading in the design class at uni. The NYTimes article talked a bit about it and more recent failures.
